A Trombone Recital: Poster Design

This was a quick poster design for a friend's graduate trombone recital. After discussing various approaches, the client produced these images of him from a wedding ceremony where he acted as the ring bearer. 
These images gave me a lot to work with, so after deciding on which to use and replacing the cane with a more suitable implement, I began developing some different approaches to the look of the typography and layout elements.

Something whimsical and light seemed like the best approach, but legibility was still very important, so three alternates were created to give the client some different approaches to the same concept.

After this, we honed in on what was felt to be the strongest approach, simple, straightforward type to let the image breathe and do the majority of the heavy lifting.

After settling on the second approach, using a fun, but heavy brushwork typeface to keep legibility high, we made some minor adjustments and sent it to the printers.
