Red Riding Hood 2016
360 x 190 cm
Hand Cut Paper and Acrylic
The overt message in the Red Riding Hood tale is a warning to young girls transitioning into womanhood not to talk to charming strangers. The wolf: charming and inquisitive, yet with much darker deeds in mind. But Red herself is no mere child. She is dressed in red, the color of passion, and she is identified with female aspects of lushness and bounty through the imagery of the contents of her basket. She is a girl on the trail to womanhood through the dark forest. In this piece, Red’s hood is incomplete as is her maturity. It is also stained red, a metaphor for: an emotional wound resulting from the tryst? The onset of puberty? The loss of innocence, virginity?
