New President Takes the Helm of LANL and LANS

Outside of serving as owner, CEO, and medical director of a private ophthalmology practice in the Los Angeles area, Dr. William De La Peña provides leadership to the University of California as an appointed member of the Board of Regents. Among his other professional duties, Dr. William De La Peña helps to oversee Los Alamos National Laboratory as a member of the Board of Governors of Los Alamos National Security, LLC.

Following the departure of Dr. Charlie McMillan in 2017, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS), have come under the leadership of a new director. Assuming this post on January 1, 2018, Dr. Terry Wallace brings unique expertise in the field of national security to the two organizations.

The recipient of degrees from the California Institute of Technology and the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Dr. Wallace initially worked with LANL in the mid-1970s. He went on to teach at the University of Arizona and serve as president of the Seismological Institute of America, among a number of other roles.

Dr. Wallace returned to LANL in 2003. Since then, he has held responsibilities as an associate director and principal associate director with several of the lab’s programs. Most recently the principal associate director for global security, he concentrated on leveraging the lab’s scientific and engineering capabilities to address nuclear and other security threats.

Members of the LANS Board of Governors announced the appointment of Dr. Wallace in November of 2017. As president, Dr. Wallace strives to enhance the lab’s 75-year history of scientific excellence. In addition, as head of LANS, he guides the organization tasked with supporting LANL in carrying out its mission.
