Visual identity for the Hungarian National HorseraceLtd

National Horseracing Ltd. races are organized at “KincsemPark”, the magical location built in the beginning of the last century. Horse races are conducted in two different running modalities: gallop and trotting. Regarding design, it was a serious task to work out how the logo could visualize these two kinds of motion. In solving this problem I had great help from Bertalan Székely’s drawings about running horses, as well as Edward Muybridge’s photo sequences. The movements of the two galloping horses that are to be seen on the logo, when projected on top of each other, show a trotting movement.

When picking out the colours I used the bourdon-black combination as this expresses the drama of the taut race. For the emblem typography I used the Caslon font type. The font type engraving dates back to the XVIIth-XVIIIth century, back to when present-day English horse racing model tradition evolved.

The horse itself and horse portrayal as well appeared almost at the same time as most ancient cultures formed. Man has endowed the horse during thousands of years with powerful symbolic meanings, lots of which we still know nowadays. They conjure the powers w e are unable to make out, and at the same time they reflect our own efforts, our strife for noble causes. Client: Kincsem Park, National Horseracing Ltd.
