52 Weeks: A Performance-Video Project Re-envisioned

52 Weeks: A Performance-Video Project Re-envisioned is a collaboration between myself and artist Jim Jeffers. This book documents and re-envisions Project 52 for 2010: an intermedia Performance / Video artwork that Jim Jeffers originally completed in 2011. The pieces were originally posted online and have been re-performed live at numerous venues across the country.

I was approached by Jim in 2017 to design and illustrate the book. The brief was to turn his original video project into print form, making it more easily accessible while also bringing new life to the project by bringing my own interpretations of his work to the original video pieces. In all I created 40+ digital illustrations for the book to go complement stills pulled from the videos and stories that give insight into each piece.

While creating the illustrations I made sure not to stray too far from the original message of the piece or the imagery, and to do that I chose to work with only stills from the videos. For the most part I found I had to play around, his videos are of various qualities and no one video could be treated the same as another. So for some I chose to use multiple video frames within a piece and overlay them together to try and re-create the movement found in those videos, however slight, into print form. For others I found it interesting to play with the shapes and textures from the stills to try and create something more abstract but still recognizable.
