Archaeological Illustration, Congham, Iron Age Sword Scabbard-Detail. This is probably my favorite record illustration, it is of a bronze,Iron Age, sword scabbard discovered in Congham, Norfolk. Thedecoration is very finely engraved into the metal. It had been bent inhalf, possible a ritual deposit. The illustration was produced toscale at twice the size of the object, so that it was possible to showmore of the fine detail. When it is published it is reduced back tosame size as the object with a scale. Objects like this are oftenpublished as drawings rather than photographs so that there is noperspective in the image, and they can be measured. With a drawing itis possible to leave out areas of corrosion and show very fine detailit would not be possible to show in just one image of an object as youcan in a drawing. © Sue White Published by the British Museum.
