Reflection

In the following project, we were briefed to create two posters of type crime. We had to organize the content into 3 levels of hierarchy that will lead the reader when viewing the posters and create a visual flow. We had to create two posters. Poster A had to be written in one typeface but any type style, it had to be created from one type size and one color including black or white. Poster B could have a max of 3 typefaces, any type size, and any color. Both posters are 24 inches by 36 inches tall. We also had to use a grid for the posters and everything had to be done in Adobe InDesign. No imagery or shapes were allowed and no centered text was allowed.

For the first poster, my initial idea was to have only the colors black and white. I wanted to create an easy and legible poster but being creative. This was very difficult because of the constraints that were put forth in the brief. I had a white background with black text on it. The text would alternate from left to right. Some information would be on the left while others were on the right. Looking at it I realized that it was too simple and basic and I knew that I could do better. My final idea from this was to arrange all my information into different shapes and ways rather than having everything look too plain and simple. I moved my information so that it creates a step-like flow or more of an arrow shape and I added a turquoise, mint-like color as the background. With my second poster I wanted to make be really creative and make all my text curve but then I change to something simple which was to put the text one on top of the other. It was to plain and usual I decided to change how I will use my grid and I used my grid in a vertical way and placed all my information in a vertical way and to make the poster visually attractive I used the color yellow and turquoise, mint color.

For the first step of my process, I sketched all my different ideas out for both posters. I sketched five ideas for each poster and I picked out the sketches which I like and felt would communicate well. From there I went digital and started with my second poster because I felt that the second poster was easier than the first poster so I worked on it first. While working on it I looked up definitions for type crimes that we had to work on. From there I wrote each one down and rephrased it. After creating my second poster I moved on to my first poster which had various constraints. I put all the phrases on the documents and looked for an appropriate legible typeface that is simple to read and I downloaded the typeface on dafont.com from there I arranged all my information from left to right. In the class work in progress critique mine was not viewed but as I was looking at other people’s work I went back to work and redid it, I made my information into an arrow for my first poster and used a background color to make it visually attractive. From there I change how I used my grid on the second poster and made it vertical and made my color’s contradictory from each other in order to create a hierarchy. From there I had a work in progress critique with peers to see where they think I should change and improve my work. I went back and I fixed both my posters as told. With the first poster, I had to move everything down so that the space on top and on the bottom are equal. On the second poster, I had to change the typeface that I used and I had to use a more legible typeface. I fixed all the errors from there I had another work on progress critique and I took all the advice that was given to me and me and I applied to my posters to perfect them.

In this project, I learned how to be creative and expressive using a minimalist approach. The project taught me to think out of the box and because using the little that you have. I learned how to work using constraints stated by the brief but also to push the brief a little bit.
