Memories, “A persons power to remember things.”

We remember experiences of joy and heart-ache, these moments define us.
I asked myself how would one view anothers rememberance of their life and travel within an image? The closest answer I concluded to would be that individuals enviroment, their home.
As a current student at the London College of Communication I couldn’t help myself but observe the cultures, nationalities and fellow students that have all come together into one singular community of creatives.
I felt it’s my task to document and compare these stories untold.

However how is one meant to photograph a students home?
I set out to photograph a series of individual portraits. Based on the concept of the passport photograph, of which examines the subject equally one from another on a plain background. Along side I insisted on asking the person to bring along a memento of home and to describe its meaning and remembrance to them.

“Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us. Time moves in one direction, memory in another. Yesterday is but today’s memory, and tomorrow is today’s dream. I chose this object, as a gateway to my dreams, my aspirations, and my stories- that I forever cherish and never want to lose touch with. Being on the road, and forever encountering such beautiful things amongst the journey, one must note before it flees away.”
Nick, 19, Southend, TV and Film Production

“This object represents everything I love. Bringing the old into the new. Incorporating the known into the unknown and the proved into dreams. I can relive my memories over and over with a camera and this means they will be forever.”

“I have many obejects and items that drive my passion and creativity on a daily basis. Although none of them point me in the correct direction. To be lost and lose my bearings whilst I strive my creativity is a major fall back. Sometimes it’s nice to be pointed in the right direction.”

“I chose this necklace, because it’s the one thing that I brought from one home to another. I found it at a vintage store in LA, over the summer and it goes everywhere with me. It’s a watch on one side, and a map of the world on the other, and although I am in London, the clock is still running on the LA time zone, symbolizing constant change, yet constant stabilization.”

“It may seem primitive, but this is tried and tested and can be extraordinarily beautiful and
intricate or mundane and ordinary. This is classic art in its own way. It has documented history and changed the way we see and look but it will always be around. Natural, pure and endless with it creativity.”

“My object, a classic cigarette case, embodies not simply my love for classicism, from golden age cinema to the bold elegance of yesteryear, but my ambitions of bettering myself. It signifies a touch of class, the prevalent class of days gone by which even granted smoking an art form, in contrast to the way smoking has become discredited as a taboo subject in the 21st century. Like many of the artefacts I discover which become personal to me, I will forever treasure my cigarette case, and each time I hear that comforting, signature click of the case shutting after I have acquired a cigarette, I will be motivated to keep aspiring for the finer things in life.”
