Reflection

Project 2 for Imaging was to create a chocolate candy bar from an allocated title. My chocolate bar was titled ‘Choc Orange’ with a focus on the product ingredient, which was an orange. There were different elements of the candy bar that took planning, research and development. The product title, product ingredient and other elements such as extra imagery and the background.

The first insight I gained from the task was ensuring that my development work had been throughly thought out, before I started creating the elements on the computer. I had a rough concept that I generated and went with, however it did change during the development process as it was not thought out enough. This resulted in spending a longer period of time working out the layout, composition and elements in the chocolate bar. Looking back I only drew two sketches for my concept, when I should have done several variations for the concept. Therefore when I got to creating on the computer I had other alternatives if one variation did not work. Furthermore it would have saved time within the development process.

Another insight that emerged from this task was researching and experimenting with retouching food. I required a stock image of an orange for the chocolate bar. Having done limited retouching, I had to undertake extensive research on the best retouching methods to make food more ‘perfect looking’. This took some time to find techniques that would be applicable to the orange. This not only broadened my Photoshop skills, but educated me about the process of heavily retouching food in design work.

An additional insight that emerged from this task was learning how to make bold, sophisticated and exciting typography in Illustrator. Initially I didn't realise how much research and experimentation has to go into finding a suitable typefaces, and building upon it. I underwent some youtube tutorials to explore a variety of techniques. The longest and hardest aspect on the process was experimenting on my chosen typeface. It was challenging to have a final design that I thought would suit the chocolate bar. However my final type design was bold not complicated, in which compliments the natural bold shapes of an orange.

Future application
For future application I have discovered that more sketches in generating is vital in the design process. Having a strong direction for the design not only makes it easier when completing on the computer, but saves time. Furthermore I will need to undertake more research than I predict not only before a project but during. I had to explore a range of techniques and methods online to not only help the task but broaden my skills.
