Week 6 | See that thing? | DXB202 #oneperday2017

DXB202 | Assessment 1 | One Image Per Day

Theme: See that thing?
Medium: Photography
Day One | Green Hair Don't Care
Technique: Face drawn with 0.5mm black ink pen on sketching paper, with broccoli strategically placed to appear like hair.
Process: I saw some broccoli in the fridge and thought that it looks a little like curly hair, and so chopped off a small branch and drew a face below it in black ink. I then used my iPhone to photograph the complete composition.
Reasoning: I chose to combine illustration and household items in order to reflect how we all visualise these items in our head however unlike a car 'face' where you can see the alternate appearance by simply looking from the different angle, the alternative object is only seen in our mind, like broccoli as hair.
Reflection: I am very happy with the finished image, however this could have been improved my adding some shading to the hand drawn face.
Day Two | A Delicious Palette
Technique: Palette drawn with 0.5mm black ink pen on sketching paper, with m&m's strategically placed to appear like paint drops.
Process: I next chose m&m's to continue the series, and began by drawing out a simple palette on white paper and placing the m&m's inside.
Reasoning: After the first success I decided I wanted to create a series of these illustration/object compositions. M&M's are a household staple that perfectly emulates paint drops due to their vibrant colours and irregular circle shape, so they were a natural next choice.
Reflection: The composition could have been improved by using smaller m&m's in order to reduce the amount of shadow.
Day Three | Vanilla 'Shell Cone'
Technique: Cone drawn with 0.5mm black ink pen on sketching paper, with white shell strategically placed to appear like an ice cream swirl.
Process: Continuing the series, I chose an upside down shell as these conical style shell's have always appeared to look like ice cream, beginning by drawing the cone and placing the shell strategically atop.
Reasoning: I chose to draw a waffle cone to add dimension within the illustration part of the composition, particularly in contrast the the smooth shell look.
Reflection: I am quite happy with the finished image, however it could have been improved by adding a background colour or looking for a more colourful shell.
Day Four | Love is in the air
Technique: Card drawn with 0.5mm black ink pen on sketching paper, with strawberry strategically placed to appear like an love heart.
Process: I began by drawing the card outline, followed by the block text with the strawberry placed last in the centre.
Reasoning: Strawberries are widely recognised as both a simple of love themselves, as well as appearing similar to a love heart, and so I chose to play on this interpretation and create a valentines day card with a strawberry as the love heart imagery.
Reflection: My positioning and manipulation of the strawberry could be improved so that it more closely resembles the heart shape. If I had grouped the leaves together in the centre I could have created a better crevice at the top.
Day Five | Trumpet Man
Technique: Mouthpiece, keys and horn drawn with 0.5mm black ink pen on sketching paper, with paperclip strategically placed to appear like the body of the trumpet.
Process: I first placed the paperclip on the paper and then drew the mouthpiece, keys and horn around so as to ensure the positioning was correct.
Reasoning: I chose a paperclip trumpet for the final image of the series as this alternative visualisation was a bit more abstract than the previous four and I wanted to challenge myself to think outside the box.
Reflection: I love the finished product, however the entire composition could have been more effective if the illustrative aspects were created with silver pen on a coloured background so that the two elements join more seamlessly.
