Tips for Blood Donors to Have a Successful Donation

A former athletic coach and teacher, Patrick Van Amburgh most recently worked as an in-school suspension teacher at Wallkill Senior High School in Wallkill, New York. As someone who strives to give back to others, Patrick Van Amburgh has donated blood on numerous occasions.

Donating blood benefits people who need blood due to an accident or illness. Volunteers can donate at blood banks or mobile blood drives. For each donation, about one pint of blood is collected from the donor. The entire process, which includes answering questions and donating, takes about an hour.

The American Red Cross offers several tips for successful blood donating.

1. Drink an additional 16 ounces of nonalcoholic beverages and eat a healthy meal before donating.

2. Wear clothing with either short sleeves or sleeves that can be raised above the elbow.

3. Keep the bandage on for several hours.

4. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours. Do not partake in heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the remainder of the day.
