JEBEL HAFEET Terrain exploration (Viewing platforms)

The program was to design platforms that are to be used by the public for viewing the site, overlooking the city, camping and so on. These platforms are to be roofless and exterior. The site is an erosion prone site with soil that consists of limestone, sand/dirt, and little rocks.
Aproach
I approached the project by extensively implanting/fusing the platforms with the landscape. I designed the platforms in such a way that the project seems like it were emerging /growing out of the landscape (using critical regionalism). Critical to the region/site in terms of the choice of materials, for example, conceptually, I decided to use the soil from the site as an aggregate in the mixture of the concrete to give the concrete a near similar appearance/colour to the site. Emphasis was also placed on the stereotomic (heavy) and tectonic (light) gestures while choosing materials, in relation to their function (i.e. outgrowth of concrete from mountain vs the cantilever of the wood-steel structure decking)

The sequence from the entry to the project to the deck at the end was choreographed in such a way that there is a constant view of the site from different angles and heights. Thereby creating a very scenography experience.
