GIN LANE, The Piece Hall

We are so excited to tell you all about this success story. We first met Gavin Morton a few years ago at one of our monthly Not-Working events held in Halifax and we’ve kept in touch ever since. Recently Gavin got in touch to say he was starting a new business and asked if we were interested in working with him and his cousin Michael. When they said the new business involved alcohol, we obviously said yes!

They explained that the new venture was to be a premium gin bar called ‘Gin Lane’ housed in The Piece Hall - a Grade 1 Listed building built in 1779, which reopened on August 1st 2017 (Yorkshire Day) after undergoing a £19m renovation project. It is predicted that The Piece Hall, along with nearby Square Chapel Arts Centre and Calderdale Industrial Museum will form part of a new cultural quarter for the town.

Our brief for the branding was simple - to take inspiration from a famous print called ‘Gin Lane’, created in 1751 by the English artist William Hogarth, which depicted the perceived ‘evils’ of gin-drinking on society at that time. This struck a chord with our Head of Creative who had actually studied Hogarth in art history whilst at college.

The WAM team was asked to create the brand, logo, website and social media to help spread the word and drive online traffic to the new bar.

The logo was created using three fonts; Daemonesque for ‘G’ avatar/icon, Cloisters Open Face for brand name and Avant Garde for the venue name. Quite unique fonts that have their own personality and meanings which sit beautifully together to create an instantly recognisable brand.

The website has been developed around the brand and will allow users to find out about events and book their own exclusive waiter/waitress served experience in the Botanicals booth. The next phase will be to develop the ability to book a mobile gin bar for outside events and also to purchase personalised bottles of Gin online.

An incredible 23,000 visitors attended the opening day of The Piece Hall on Yorkshire Day, and hear quite a few enjoyed a few cheeky gins throughout the day!

As you can imagine, we’ve loved working on this project and can’t wait to celebrate their future success.
