Logo design, for The Willow Tree

I was hired by a yoga instructor to design a logo for a line of yoga gear. She named the line "The Willow Tree" because the willow is very sturdy and well-rooted, yet flexible enough to bend with the wind, just like the body during yoga practice. I set out to abstract the tree until I achieved the symbol below. Then I handlettered the logotype, by drawing the letters directly underneath the symbol and aligning them with the twigs of the tree. However, this seemed too harmonious to the point that there was no longer any hierarchy between the symbol and logotype. In later sketches, I resolved to keeping the logotype and symbol separate entities that can be interchanged in the identity. The logotype, when placed on its own, echoes strongly the symbol because the proportions of the positive and negatives were originally based on the symbol.
