Project Definition
This is my senior capstone project. ‘Soul of Athens’ is a yearly collaboration between all of the graduating senior interactive design and photography students in Scripps College at Ohio University. It’s comprised of a website featuring stories of local residents and their achievements. The live website can be viewed at http://2017.soulofathens.com.
Team Work
The project was set up so that the photographers would gather material and create the stories during the first half of the semester and we, the designers, did some preliminary design work and gave input and suggestions to the photographers on their stories. Once the stories were finished, the designers finished any design and coding work before launching the website to feature the stories. The team met up about once a week outside of class to work together and iron out any problems we were running into. For certain tasks, such as organizing and shooting the video on the home page, we brainstormed in a large group and then let a smaller group work on the execution. In order to stay up to date and share files easily, we used Slack and a cloud service provided by the university.
Personal Contribution
I collaborated with the general design group on possible layouts, style guides (specifically with typeface choices) and worked closely with the other two coders to create the live website. My work focused primarily on using Javascript to create the accordion slider on the homepage. In doing so, I became a lot more acquainted with CSS transitions and transformations, Javascript callback function and JSON files. I also learnt to appreciate the beauty of both the community at Stack Overflow and my team members who willing to go on joint debugging efforts when things went wrong.
