Nicholas Rauber's profile

The Pathway to Stop Diabetes

A dentist with the Aesthetic Dentistry Group in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Nicholas “Nick” Rauber, DDS, also serves as the director of the charity event Swollfest Fishing Rodeo. Since founding this nonprofit fishing tournament in 1997 in honor of his stepfather, Dr. Nick Rauber has helped to raise more than $1.2 million for a wide variety of charities. Swollfest has earned national recognition as one of the top donors for the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

In addition to funding its own research and advocacy efforts, ADA provides financial and institutional support to its other programs, such as Pathway to Stop Diabetes. Over the years, ADA has raised over $40 million to fund various Pathway to Stop Diabetes initiatives.

Pathway to Stop Diabetes primarily concentrates on finding funding for younger scientists, who typically have difficulty securing backing through traditional avenues such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Even though diabetes affects more people in the US than both cancer and HIV/AIDS, the NIH devotes just over a $1 billion to diabetes research, compared to a $5 billion budget for cancer research and nearly $3 billion for HIV/AIDS.

Pathway to Stop Diabetes currently funds 23 scientists who perform both basic science and clinical/transitional research. This research encompasses all aspects of gestational, type 1, and type 2 diabetes, including related issues such as obesity.
