Cabinets of Costume:Victorian Reproduction

In collaboration with a garment technology student Jackie Massey together we made a reproduction of a original 1860 Victorian dress from the Birmingham City University (BCU) Archive to be displayed within the Cabinets of Costume exhibition in Parkside which ran along side the international costume conference Costume, Culture and Dress. We got to investigate the construction of the original dress and quickly record all its detail and measurements to then reconstruction of the garment out of organzey using our own patterns drafted from our record information, known as a gorilla method. This is the first Victorian costume we had ever made with no prior experience with this period. This was a challengeing project where we learnt a great deal ourselves and believe we executed the dress very well which can be since in these images below.
