As a Designer, illustrator or other visual artist you wil get that question form time to time "hé man could you make a card for my up-comming baby" and you always should say yes, most of the times... But unlike any other job its probably not going to be a well-payed job, you want to help your friends and if they like your approach and style i consider it a win-win !
The parents define their relationship on the experiences the have together, both big travel fans had spend some time in Brazil and falling in love with the culture and the great times they had over there. So Brazil is the theme of this project.
While looking for some type treatment and not just scrolling for fonts to use i remembered a VICE report on a specific graffiti style that was everywhere in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro called Pichação. Being a tag its very crude, hard to read at times
and you really want people te read what the baby's name is, so i experimented with a more straight and angled lines.
I tried to balance the the straight lines with curved lines, its not completely in a grid. I took some liberty to keep it optical balanced to what i wanted, inspired by the playful tag style for the lines and composition while keeping it a readable as possible. If the B bas completely closed on the side its would have been to straightforward, just like the A the shape has more room to breath and come to its own. Its also usable as a stencil, thats for when he grows up ;-)
Something that makes this project extra special is the beer we brewed for the birth-present to enjoy with family and friends that come to visit the new-born baby (the baby-shower was a blast) Its an nice adaptation to the candy sugar-beans thats traditionally been given as a gift. Combining the best of Belgian ingredients with a lot of tropical, fruity flavoured hops.
And now the little guy is born and all the beer is gone wa can really start loving this new member of the family — Cheers.
