I was asked to create a set of stickers for Facebook's Messenger app and I wanted to try to take a unique approach to the set. Where most (at the time) of the sticker sets were individual emotions throughout, I wanted to do that but with an overarching theme / story to the set. Of course the result was somewhat abstract but it does allow you to interpret the story as you wish.

Ultimately I wanted to communicate the idea of friendship and clumsiness of a skeleton camping. He wakes up sad to see he has no messages, but realizes thats a good thing and that he can go camping, but sadly he's not very good at camping and feels lonely. Fortunately he stumbles upon a critter in the woods that starts scary but ends up being a gift and he and the new friend can camp together as best friends.

I wanted to create these images at a large size but make sure they still held up at small sizes. Each sticker stands alone as a full size piece with lots of fun details but scaling down, losing the details is okay because the shape language and value structure is still strong.

Size and scalability were the largest challenge for the project. Knowing these are going to be seen at a very small size often, I wanted to make sure things would be clear immediately. Borrowing from my limited animation knowledge, staying on model and keeping things largely expressive were the best tips for myself. I tried to also play with colder colors for the sad images, and warmer for the fun without hitting the user over the head with the tones.
