New York Underground is a tribute to FSA Photographer Walker Evans' photographic work titled "Many Are Called" published in 1966. A three-year photographic study made in the New York City subway, between 1938 and 1941. More than 70 years have passed since he captured for the first time, these visionary images of unknown passengers in the subway with a 35 mm Leica camera. The modernity of the timeless anthropological approach of his work has always been in my the back of my mind. Recently in New York, I was in the subway and sudently realised that I was seating right in front of a 70 "live" Walker Evans image from his "Many Are Called" series. I could not resist the temptation to pull my Sony Nex-7 camera and start shooting. Here is the result of this timeless referential encounter with photography history and a tribute to one of my favorite photographers in the age of digital media, cells phones, multiculturalism and globalisation.
Nueva York Subterráneo es un homenaje al fotógrafo estadounidense de la FSA Walker Evans (1903-1975) y a su trabajo "Muchos se llaman" publicado en 1966. Mas de 70 años han pasado desde que el tomó por primera vez estas visionarias imágenes de pasajeros desconocidos en el subterráneo con una cámara Leica. La modernidad e intemporalidad de su mirada antropológica siempre ha estado en mi mente. Recientemente, de paso por Nueva York, estaba en el subterráneo y repentinamente me di cuenta de que estaba sentado en frente de una imagen "en vivo" de Walker Evans. No pude resistir sacar mi cámara Sony-Nex7 y empezar a fotografiar. Este es el resultado de un encuentro intemporal con la historia de la fotografía y un homenaje a uno de mis fotógrafos preferidos en la era digital, de los teléfonos inteligentes, el multiculturalismo y la globalización.
