JDRF Publishes First-Ever Exercise Guidelines

A student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, Clifford “Cliff” Kigar is studying mechanical engineering. Outside of his academic life, Cliff Kigar supports several charitable organizations, including the efforts of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to put an end to type 1 diabetes.

Researchers with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) have, for the first time, compiled a comprehensive set of physical activity recommendations for individuals who have type 1 diabetes (T1D). The recommendations were recently published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. They consist of optimal glucose levels to monitor during exercise, as well as insulin modifications and suggestions about how to change one’s diet to accommodate the increased activity.

The research team spent two years analyzing data from studies involving the physical activity of people with T1D. By maintaining regular physical activity, people with T1D can potentially lower their daily insulin dependency, improve heart health, and improve their blood pressure.
