Language Games
A folly in a field or a field of follies
The project served as a means to examine methods and techniques of reading and documenting intangible and abstract qualities such as narrative and structure. Georges Perec’s ‘Life: A user’s manual’ provided a basis for this interrogation. A visual textual analysis through various systems of documentation resulted in work which was abstracted from the original material. Resulting in a physical manifestation of abstract qualities.  
 
Drawings were made using a cut/fold format derived from previous drawings over a 1:5000 scale map of the site and its surrounding area (covering approximately 8 x 5 km). Boundaries and paths were generally taken as cut lines, physical features as folds and land lines and visual formations as score lines. These drawings were printed onto grey card and using the same process as previous explorations and models were made using the drawings diagrammatically. As each model was made it was placed on the map in accordance to the map references and the given geometry of the model. In total 41 models were made and one or more models were located in each square of the grid.
The model located within the given site is illustrated here as a series of internal and external images. Above shows the unfolded net of the model and to the right shows the 1:5000 map, grid system, cut/fold drawing and the specified site model. The layout of the models on the site is fairly reminiscent of the original drawings in the way that although the models (nodes) fall seemingly randomly across the map they do lay within a very rigid grid system. The initial reference system referring to the chess board now refers to the grid reference on the map.
