The Science Fiction TV Dinner series produced by the Center for Science and the Imagination at Arizona State University is a launch pad for imaginative, engaging conversations about science, technology, and society. Since 2012, the series has developed an enthusiastic following on and off campus, providing the opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, learn, and explore visions of the future in an entertaining and informal setting.
It was important to me that there was a respect to fandom with the promotional materials, so each season I get to dip my toe into a few new fan communities and make some art from that.
Max Headroom is a wild show. I wanted to make a wild painting to match it. I kept the palette fairly limited to the first 8 web safe colors.
Michael Burnham from Star Trek: Discovery. I wanted it clear to fans that the episode we were featuring was from the beginning of season 1, so her hair is looser and she is wearing the prison uniform.
I grew up watching Small Wonder and it is a terrible show, but I loved drawing V.I.C.I.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer isn't science fiction, but the episode we discussed dealt with robots and identity.
I love hiding things in binary. This binary code translates to "Danger, Will Robinson!"
House, MD was one of the earliest events we did. On a whim I decided to draw a very pensive Dr. House.
For the show Torchwood. I thought the jacket was the iconic visual element of that show that was easily recognizable.
For the show Person of Interest I wanted to give an art deco feel to the facial recognition interface. Plus some other weird stuff thrown in.
