36 DAYS OF TYPE
In 2017 I decided to join the annual 36 Days of Type challenge on Instagram. The challenge is to create one letter each day in a row for 36 days, which results in less then 24 hours for each letter.
My main focus was to experiment with new technical workflows and tools.
All images were created in Cinema 4D and rendered in Octane with slight retouching in Photoshop. Additional tools, that were used include Houdini, 3D Coat and Marvelous Designer.

Here you can see a selection of my favorite letters.
The letter A was created in Marvelous Designer, which was perfect for the shape and physical simulation. Shading and rendering was done in Cinema 4D and Octane.
The letter B was inspired by Westworld. Houdini was used to create the procedural geometry.
C is for cloud — The shape for the letter C was created in Houdini using VDBs and was later exported to C4D/Octane.
The rectangular letter F was heavily inspired by dystopian science fiction works like Blade Runner. I used Vitaly Bulgarov's amazing megastructure kitbash set to quickly block the shape and distribute details. Final details like the small vehicles were added as overpaint in Photoshop.
G is for geography — the letter G was created as a height field in Houdini and later rendered in Cinema 4D and Octane.
I is for Inception — the letter I is an homage to Christopher Nolan's movie Inception. The building shapes were created  in 3D Coat and later rendered in Cinema 4D and Octane.
K is for Kubrick — the letter K is an homage to the famous inner circle scene from Stanley Kubrick's movie »Dr. Strangelove«. The whole scene was set up and rendered in Cinema 4D and Octane.
L is for laser — there was only one choice for the letter L! Heavily inspired by the environments of games like Half-Life and Portal, I used Vitaly Bulgarov's kitbash parts to create this scene, which was completely set up and rendered in Cinema 4D and Octane.
N is for Nostromo — the letter N was created as an homage to the famous spaceship USCSS Nostromo, which you might know from Ridley Scott's movie Alien. The whole scene was created in Cinema 4D and Octane using kitbash parts for a fast workflow.
THANK YOU!
