CX500 Cafe Racer Build

2017
My CX500 project started back in August 2015. I’ve always had a passion for making, design and motorcycles, but had yet to start a project that combined all three. The opportunity presented itself after I won an auction for a none-running box of bits. Equipped with an owners manual I got straight to work tearing down the bike, rebuilding, replacing and modifying as I went. It was in a sorry state and hadn't run since 1985. With a tight budget and eagerness to learn new skills, I planned to do all the work myself and where possible make performance upgrades. For the style of the bike, I wanted a clean cafe brat style to show the unique transverse V-Twin power-plant mixed with some modern touches.

With my background as an Industrial Designer, I created a concept render and designed most of the parts, including the new subframe, in CAD. I don’t have an elaborate workshop or tools and was often working where I could, friends garages, living room floor and my parents shed. Over the next year and a half I detailed down to every nut, bolt and washer entirely on my own.

It’s been a great project, through which I learned a multitude of valuable skills and expertise. In a bitter sweet end, I have now put the bike in storage as I have relocated to the UK. Before leaving however, I got a couple of rides in, which I will never forget. There’s nothing quite like riding a bike you've invested money, hard work, time, and above all passion to give life back to an old machine.
