Granite & Chalk — Identity for a short film

Granite & Chalk
Identity for a short film
—The Client
A 12-minute documentary released for the centenary of the 1916 Irish Rebellion, Granite & Chalk featured newly declassified information that the British regime had placed spies within the Irish movement.

Visually, the film combines imagery from the era including archive video footage and still images of newly declassified documents, as well as original illustration and animation by Irish animator Stephen McNally.

—Challenges
I was keen to create an identity which would represent the film well in the context of the 1916 centenary. I wanted to channel the era of 1916, a sense of patriotism and rebellion, and bring it together in a modern and visually enticing way.

—Solution
The core of the identity is a logotype inspired by the fascinating 1916 Proclamation of the Republic. I discovered that Distillers Press in NCAD maintains a collection of wood and metal type very similar to what was used in the 1916 Proclamation.

The text was rendered using the letterpress machines in Distillers Press, under the direction of Mary Plunkett, and was then digitised and used across the films various media.

Posters in various formats and DVD labels were required for the film, and I also designed and maintained the films website. I provided a logo for Naomico, the production company behind the film.

The film won the “Spirit of 1916“ award at the Dublin Animation Film Festival, 2016.
