William De La Peña's profile

Los Alamos National Laboratory

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) knows that sparking a passion for research and innovation in curious young minds depends on engaged, dedicated, and knowledgeable teachers. That’s why LANL developed its distinctive Math and Science Academy for Teachers (MSA), which it has offered to educational professionals in northern New Mexico for more than 15 years.

An intensive three-year program, MSA is focused on building whole-school continuous improvement in math and science on both the teaching and learning side. The broad goals of the MSA include increasing teacher content knowledge in the fields of math and science, helping teachers to integrate research-supported practices into their classrooms, developing leadership capacity at both the school and district level, and ultimately improving the state of student learning and achievement in science and math.

Teachers participating in the program attend a three-week summer institute, which covers STEM education content, as well as best practices in teaching methods, assessment, student engagement, and brain-based learning. Teachers also receive comprehensive school-year support in their planning and delivery of math and science lessons.

LANL is overseen by Los Alamos National Security, which appointed Dr. William De La Peña to its Board of Governors in May 2016.
