Medio June 2012 I got to it to build a piece of proper controller code to intermediate between Renoise (my music making program of choice) and the Akai Pro MPK mini. I wanted to see how much functionality I could reach without PC keyboard and mouse, and the MPK has only 8 encoders and 8 pads..

So the end product, about 3K+ lines of lua code, handles all these, lights up pads with certain functions, etc. The pads act as pushbuttons (when in CC mode) and are selectors to what functionality the knobs are bound. You can see the results below.
