Working with Californian enterprise, NEUROSKY, which specializes in developing accessible brainwave reading products and services, these five concepts served as initiation to specializing into one of the five proposed areas as a longer project at School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University tutored by Roger Ball and Yan Luximon.
My first thought was a device for victims of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder to help themselves gain instant relief during stress attacks by measuring and displaying their brain activity on a digital device along with suitable advice. I also worked with the idea of developing a more usable headset as showed in THOUGHT ANALYST, which is also featured in FOLLOW THE LIGHT - an interactive office environment where a light above the employees heads shines up as dedication to the current task rises. On the other hand, when an employee is experiencing a lull, the luminescence of the light will decrease and (hopefully) encourage someone to head over and cheer them up.
I also made a proposal to use the technology in a fitness context, where yoga class participants work together to achieve a high state of meditation reflected in the ambience of the room. Finally, the last concept was to work with the contradictions between meditation and concentration to solve complex physical tasks realized as a maze where your level of meditation determines how much of the maze you can actually see.
This ended up being the project I chose to take forward, although it transformed into the creation of a headset instead. To view this project, go to MINDHALO - also in the design section of the site.
