Personal Design Process Map

Design ProcessMap, Winter 2009 Instructor: AnneTraver, Partner, Methodologies, Inc. Objective:
Toidentity, clarity and prioritize the role of personal values, rewards andresponsibilities within the context of a life in design. This “DesignProcess Map” documents my design methods and design principles. I was inspiredby the Chinese Calligraphy theory “The Eight Methods of the Character Yong(Yong Zi Ba Fa) ” in Tang Dynasty (618-907).  The character “Yong”consists of eight strokes, which represent the basic structure of Chinesewriting system. Every other character could find the same stroke of themselvesfrom the character “Yong”. Therefore, I adopted this theory as a metaphor for my own design processmap, in order to emphasize that although design projects could vary, they allcontain the similar design method in general, such as design methodologies, project evaluation. Furthermore, Ibelieve that design is a systematic approach, which requires scientific methodsand pragmatic execution. Design needs dictatorship, which requires the teamleader to obtain the ability of decision-making during the critical moment. Designis thinking made visual. It consists of intelligence and highly aestheticvalue.
