Protection

To visually represent the concept of emotional protection I have created a series of installations using multiple opposing casts of my face imprisoned in three sets of steel enclosures. One cast represents an outer shell devoid of emotion while the other exhibits internal emotions of stress and anxiety. The two casts juxtapose the emotions we feel internally and what is shown to the world. The false outer face not only protects against the deluge of daily stress and anxiety but also puts on a “good” face that is socially acceptable—one that hides our inner turmoil. Use of multiple casts, imprisoned in steel bars, reinforces the intensity and commonality of this never-ending struggle. Like the outer false face, the bars act as a form of protection, keeping stress and anxiety inside, and symbolise the strength and rigidity of social protocols that mandate feelings be internalised. Creating a series of three installations creates a provocative piece that compels the viewer to react on an emotional level and question the relationship between protecting one’s emotions and the social protocols that demand we hide our inner feelings.
