Waves

What is a wave? The idea permeating this series is to photograph a concept by using two elements. In this series, Jean intends to capture the separation between air and water – that very fine line that may be regarded as the surface of one element but that, actually, may be the limit of the other. According to Bérard, a wave “is the exact movement of the separation between air and water”. It is where both collide – where they touch – and even though we can be certain that matter is absent; paradoxically, we can also affirm that it exists and that it can be photographed. In this sense, what the photographer reveals is the surface of air or water moving in complete isolation, with nothing under, over or within it: only surface. In these photographs, both air and water are transparent, and what we see is nothing more than separation between them.
