One of the leading university poetry centers in the United States and the only one with an interactive poetry park, the Wick Poetry Center is unique for its range of impactful programming, which includes education, performance, publications and outreach.
Traveling Stanzas is a collaborative effort between the Wick Poetry Center and the School of Visual Communication Design at Kent State University. To be located at Summit Art Space in Akron, Ohio, The Traveling Stanzas Exhibition will create an experience that engages the community Akron, with focus on refugee and immigrant populations, in an inclusive cross-cultural conversation that fosters a shared human experiences through the ability of poetry to cross borders.
Concept: Statement exploring poetry using our five senses: sight, hear, touch, smell, and taste.
We wanted to encourage the viewer to expand the way they think about and engage with poetry whether they are a interacting with poetry for the first time, or they are an experienced poet. There are many ways to interact with and absorb the information in a poem. Smells, sounds, feelings can all tell a story and connect people. Our exhibit is designed to let the viewer interact with poetry using each sense as they move throughout the exhibit. We wanted to impress on the viewer that poetry is multi-dimensional and there are limitless possibilities as to what it can mean. We hope the exhibit will inspire the viewer to learn more about poetry or be inspired to write some of their own.
