Print engines are typically wide and boxy. The Deskjet 5550 was designed to bring forward moving lines to a traditionally static product. 

To take full advantage of the design theme, many innovative mechanisms were investigated for the access door. The final production design used a bar linkage to rotate and slide the door to create additional access to the users.
