Package design for Kolhapuri chappals
Kolhapuri chappals are famous handcrafted footwear made in Kolhapur town in Maharashtra In Kolhapur, these chappals are called Pie-taan. Kolhapuri chappals are made from processed leather. This is a hypothetical project done for Maharashtra Small Scale Industry Development Corporation.

Need for design:
Dying Art: Kolhapuri chappals (slippers) have no patent protection, so the markets are flooded with cheap imitations made in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, where craftsmen use plywood instead of leather.
No Packaging Available: Kolhapuri chappals are generally packed in newspaper or in plastic results into damaged product. Kolhapuri chappals do not have any platform to establish their product as a brand.

Concept:
The idea was to develope a sustainable packaging which goes on to be a part of the product post purchase as well. The ethnic packaging not only creates relation with the culture but also emphasis on reuse and recycle. The material used is washable in nature and hence the product can be kept in the package after multiple usage providing better maintainance free of cost. Its easy to carry. Also, the packaging creates point of intrest which leads to brand promotion in asthetics as well as usablity factors.
