‘While you were sleeping: Jurong Fishery Port’
Abstract

‘While you were sleeping: Jurong Fishery Port’ is a photo series that aims to showcase what goes on behind the scenes of a big-scale fish market. It operates six nights a week and is located in the Western part of Singapore. The photos reveal the hidden lives of these hardworking individuals, working in the dead of the night amongst wet and grimy floors with undesirable smells, while we are comfortably asleep in our beds. I have chosen to show a glimpse of Jurong Fishery Port through my own visual perspective, capturing the awe I felt when I first visited the port and driven by my fascination of the interaction of man within his environment. I feel there’s a certain honest truth to documentary photography and each image captured has its own unique story to tell. Each individual has their own role to achieve, which contributes to this messy yet organised and systematic movement we see happening throughout the port. These people toil into the night so people like us have fresh fish to buy at the market the next morning. Therefore, this series encapsulates this whole underlying process before the fish arrives to your neighbourhood market.
