Natural Phenomena

Hand-woven, Hand-dyed, Hand-made.
Nature, (noun). The phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth, as opposed to humans or human creations.
The works that I have created for this project encapsulate the values that I try to incorporate into all of my works. They have a focus on process, especially techniques, and sustainability, while promoting an aesthetic of minimalism based on a nature-based concept. Additionally, the concept for the finished item was created with the idea of household use.
My inspiration for these pillows is derived from a hike I took while living in Maryland on the Billy-goat trail. Recalling the freshness of the air, the sound of the river, and the shapes of the plants and rocks, I selected a pattern which I felt best represented these feelings. I selected wool as my fiber of choice as I appreciate the sustainability of it compared to other fibers, and decided to naturally dye the yarns with six different dyestuffs.
My process took the yarn from an undyed skein form and brought it to the finished product, including techniques such as natural dyeing, weaving, and hand-stitching. The hands-on nature of each step of the process allowed me to have a direct hand in each aspect of the final result. Ideally, these would serve as accent pillows for a bed or for a couch.
