THE NORWEGIAN EMBASSY IN ATHENS
A modern, professional and functional environment was requested for the new Norwegian embassy in Athens, while seeking at the same time a recognizable Norwegian identity, reflecting Norwegian character.
The graphic concept is based on these principals and supplements the architectural design. Therefore a custom graphic system was designed that can be applied in many different ways in space considering the needs, whether they are decorative or communicative, iconographic or abstract.
The design concept was applied on two levels: decorative and informational.
Decoratively the transparency of the office spaces is broken by a design pattern of frosted film positioned on the glass partitions that is influenced by traditional Norwegian Selbu knitting.
The second informational facet of the concept was applied on wool or textile designs that compliment informational areas in the space such as restrooms, print room, wardrobe, etc. Here a coloured signage distinguishes the individual offices, and is an actual piece of knitting, again based upon Norwegian patterns but knitted by Greek grandmothers.
This was with the architectural concept, the graphic design and finally a selection of Norwegian designed furniture, lighting fixtures such as the reindeer lamp, and specifically chosen art complement the Norwegian feel.
