Besides being the perfect background for pictures taken by day-tourists the Birdnest stadium holds no longer his true function as an arena for (sport) events. Several initiatives are currently taken place to revitalize the stadium and its surroundings. An art collector together with a developer commissioned us to design an art hotel in the stadium. The The intensive collection of art is dominated by surrealistic paintings and sculptors. It contains work from Dali and Escher. These Surrealism artists inspired us for the design of the lobby. Here we shifted the art theme of impossible surfaces and motions to architecture. The staircase is the main design feature in the lobby. The way it flows in the space gives you the impressions that it is an infinite volume containing a continuous stair walk, like the famous Escher stair drawings. The white color emphasizes the fluid and sculptural shape of the stair.
