George Mason
True Mountain Man
We stumbled upon a man named George today. This 80 year old cowboy allowed us onto his beautiful piece of land in Leadville, CO today in order to shoot a band called The Afters. Mr. Webster quickly opened up to us by sharing a few life stories (like he hadn't in a while). It became more and more evident that he leads a solitary type of lifestyle and deeply yearns for human connection. Although story after story involved heartbreak, tragedy, and death, I was fascinated. This genuine character had gained my respect for his transparency and honesty. I was shocked by his seemingly accurate portrayal of events that had occurred 50 years prior. I wish I could have had more time with this man.. both for my sake and for his. He needed to make his story known. I've learned over the years that humans have an innate longing to be known. I am reminded by a quote by Christopher McCandless, who had abandoned society to seek happiness in Alaska and eventually passed away in the wilderness. On his death bed he engraved the words, "Happiness is only real when shared." It was a privilege to have met George Webster and to listen to a bit of his story. He extended the invite for us to return and I believe that I, for one, will. I look forward to that day.
