Portraits en passant

This photo essay explores Drugstore, a chess pub situated in the vibrant heart of Heidelberg, southern Germany, which draws a varied crowd including homeless individuals, students, intellectuals spanning all generations. Dating back more than 56 years and nestled on a small cobblestone street surrounded by centuries-old buildings, the pub has quietly become one of the city's best-kept secrets.

Despite remaining unchanged for the past 50 years, the pub has encountered significant challenges, including nearly closing its doors during the COVID-19 crisis and changing ownership multiple times. From the outside, it may appear unremarkable. However, upon stepping inside Drugstore, I was captivated by the array of faces, the ambiance, and every corner of the establishment. Each visit deepened my affection for the pub as I delved into the characters and explored the worlds created through every chess game.

In defiance of the trend toward online isolation and the economic repercussions of the COVID crisis, Drugstore provides a genuine space for meaningful conversations, interactions, and an intimate atmosphere. Many of the players depicted in my series have since passed away.
