Ring is a design study around the idea of transferring the design language of the Lenovo lePhone into a small size notebook.
Using very specific attributes like the iconic racetrack outline, the speaker integration and metal frame, I choose to keep their identity while changing some proportions, materials and general architecture. The challenge was to maintain a consistent brand image in applying those transformations and create something that was a decent new product with a familiar design language but not a copy-paste of its little brother.
Just like the phone, the outline is composed by two straight lines on each on the long side and two subtle curvatures on the small side giving it a generous and friendly aspect as well as slightly glamourous like a make-up box. The cherry-red top cover is using a transparent plastic with a metallic painting applied on its inner surface.
The keyboard cover area have an intriguing area on its metal rim... Just like the phone that has a chrome ring for a purely decorative aspect, we found a similar metal ring here, made of anodize aluminum, that, on top of acting as a decorative part and a visual separation from cover and base, serves also as mouse buttons as suggested by the single cut on the front of the notebook.
Picture below is showing details of the front area, the metal ring divided in two parts for the left/right click use, the recess in the ring for an easy opening, and the power button located on the right side of the base.
