In June 2012 I had a two-week artist residency at Huyck Preserve in New York. I was to give them one finished illustration in exchange for my brief stay, but I was given the opportunity to meet other artists in the field and talk with biologists and researchers about how they perceive their need for illustrations and how they would prefer to be contacted by an artist.
For the illustration I was to give them I decided to feature an invasive species of crayfish with a native one. Apparently it was not known that they had an invasive species of crayfish, so thanks to my illustration, further research may be done on the preserve to see if any of the damage to biodiversity can be mitigated.
