WXPN Calendar 2005

WXPN is the University of Pennsylvania's student radio station and the area's leading college station.  Best known for the World Cafe with David Dye, which is syndicated to over 165 Public Radio Stations.

I was hired by Philadelphia art director Scott Bolger to design the 2005 WXPN calendar. We were given a pile of photographs of DJs, station event photos, dozens of important moments in rock history and a list of the top 885 songs of all time as voted by their listeners.  In 2004 vernacular elements were all the rage and and the most logical solution in this 11th hour project.

The 885 songs were divided by 12, papers and textures were gathered and we set about creating a grid with a great deal of space to create what for me were paintings representing each month. Keeping the myriad text elements interesting, legible and typographically distinctive was a challenge throughout.  As the project was on an extremely fast track the first sketches for each month had to be the final art.
