BArch 5th Year - Travel Semiotics

Travel Semiotics
Travel semiotics is a 5 th year BArch project exploring the concept of semiotics and architectonic language.
I begin by documenting my train journey from Lincoln to Portsmouth and coding each experience into a set of symbols, then separatingthese into ‘actions’ ‘movement’ and ‘stills’. For example I interact with atrain barrier and button, but I see buildings in the distance and have no effecton their presence.
The symbols were mapped out onto my journey reducing theprocess to a minimum and simplifying the architectonic language. Heights andthicknesses convey the importance of the action and the relationship to itscounterpart.
A set of models were later produced to serve materiality andcontext. Wax created the effect of my journey being carved out through thelandscape and my movement through travel. This serves the purpose of layeringand the sometimes, repetitiveness of a journey which can transcend into a vaguedisplacement of time.
