The Marshwood Vale

I started the Marshwood Vale series of paintings with "Marshwood Clouds". The series is based on the view from the top of the hill between my studio and my house. The hills and valley are part of the Marshwood Vale, and lie in West Dorset on the Dorset / Devon border next to the coast.

Each painting in the series is 48" x 22" (120 x 55 cm) and is painted using oil on canvas.

I work on several at the same time as they each take at least 6 months to create.

These views arelooking west, and if you were to turn and look south you'd look towardsthe small harbour town of West Bay, once a busy hub for Bridport'sfamous net-making industry in the 18th century, now almost forgotten, and home to rock star PJ Harvey. 15 miles along the west of the coastline is the historic Lyme Regis, with it's famous Cob jutting out tothe sea, as mentioned in the 1969 novel "The Friench Lieutenant'sWoman" by local author John Fowles - later made into a major film withMeryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. 20 miles eastwards along the coast isPortland, a rocky peninsula that juts out from Weymouth Bay. Portlandwhich is still quaried for it's pale rock, which is used extensivly inbuldings across the UK.
