INTRODUCTION

This group project required us to form a team of "investigators" who would then collaborate on exploring a "Mystery Box" of clues and then use those clues to develop the basic plot and characters of a Fictional Mystery which would eventually be developed into a movie poster in the Film Noir Style.

RESEARCHING CHARACTERISTICS OF FILM NOIR

I researched the basic characteristics of Film Noir:

1. A French term meaning “black film,” or film of the night.
2. A movie which at no time misleads you into thinking there is going to be a happy ending.
3. Locations that reek of the night, of shadows, of alleys, of the back doors of fancy places, of apartment buildings with a high turnover rate, of taxi drivers and bartenders who have seen it all.
4. Cigarettes. Everybody in film noir is always smoking, as if to say, “On top of everything else, I’ve been assigned to get through three packs today.”
5. Women who would just as soon kill you as love you, and vice versa.
6. For women: low necklines, floppy hats, mascara, lipstick, dressing rooms, boudoirs… high heels, red dresses, elbow length gloves, mixing drinks […]
7. For men: fedoras, suits and ties, shabby residential hotels with a neon sign blinking through the window, buying yourself a drink out of the office bottle, cars with running boards, all-night diners […]
8. Movies either shot in black and white, or feeling like they were.
9. Relationships in which love is only the final flop card in the poker game of death.
10. The most American film genre, because no society could have created a world so filled with doom, fate, fear and betrayal, unless it were essentially naive and optimistic.

——————————————————————————-
These 10 film noir characteristics illuminate the unique aspects of the style coined by French film critics after World War II. Film noir represents a darker side of American film that began to replace the cheerier side of Hollywood in the 1940s.

Film noir movies have fatalistic attitudes. A character will often feel like their life is pre-ordained and that free will is an illusion. This film noir characteristic was influenced by the international conflicts of the time and the powerlessness to avoid them many Americans felt.

Fatalism is expressed by one transgression that spirals out of control.  The average citizen character makes a mistake that snowballs into much greater problems. Every attempt at correction just makes everything worse. This is often called a spider web of deceit in film noir. It can suggest hysteria and panic.

Voice-overs are common. This is due to the popularity of Freudian thought at the time. The voice-over narration film noir characteristic represents psychological reflection and introspection by a character.

The femme fatale female archetype originates in film noir. These female characters represent independence, strength and desire, a response to the brief destruction of the demure housewife stereotype. They are often used to emphasize the fatalist attitude in that the male characters feel powerless to resist the women. Often the femme fatale will enter a love triangle with a married man.

Another female role is the menaced woman. In film noir, if the main character is female she will often be tormented psychologically or physically by a man, usually a love interest.
Male protagonists are often morally ambiguous. They are cynical, brooding and obsessive. They lead a seamy existence as private detectives, gangsters or government agents, among others. In film noir, the struggle these characters undergo often ends in failure.

The cinematography reinforces the darkness in the plot and theme. Long, sharp shadows are used in film noir as well as inky blackness. Tilted camera angles with a claustrophobic feel emphasize a nocturnal underworld.

Sets have a gloomy feel. Film noir often takes place indoors in spaces with low-key lighting. Blinds often obscure windows. Exterior scenes include streets and alleys, dark and wet. Flashing neon signs were popular to use in film noir. These type of sets were partially due to war time scarcity.

Story locations are urban. The characters will often be seen in murky streets, cheap, big city apartments or hotel rooms. Abandoned warehouses are also seen in this film noir characteristic.

Some film noirs are produced in a semi-documentary style. These movies are based on real events, usually crime or espionage. They are set in urban areas and deliberately have a realistic feel. Many are filmed in locations where the actual event took place in real life.

EXPLORING THE MYSTERY BOX

We explored the contents of our "Mystery Box", which happened to be an old briefcase. We took photographs of each item and added them to an evidence list. Here I've only included photos of the items that were relevant to the plot that that we constructed.
Old Photographs
Items put together to create a character history for Tony the private investigator.
The Secret Key Method.
The Secret Key Method.
A note from Tony to Judith.
The letter from the UN concerning the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York.
Items used to transfer information using the Secret Key method.
Sophia's reference letter from the UN.
Sophia's reference letter from the EU.

OUR HYPOTHESIS

As a group we worked through the clues to decide on the central characters and to determine the basic plot. We decided on the following main characters:
1) An investigator by the name of Tony
2)  a woman by the name of Sophia who had worked for the EU as well as the UN
3)  A couple of suspects based on the documentation contained in the Mystery Box.

We determined the central figures of the story and the major theme together. However specifics of the stories were to be determined individually.

Below are some photos of us working through the evidence to formulate a central plot and determine the major players.

MY STORY PLOT & SYNOPSIS

WHEN & WHERE
This story takes places from 1998 to the early 2000s.  It spans multiple locations in Europe - , the UN Headquarters in Geneva, the Hotel Lotti in Paris, as well the HQ of the Watchtower Bible Tract Society in NYC (USA).

WHO
The main characters in this story are as follows :
Tony Capstone (the Protagonist)
Sophia Corsava (Suspect, UN - Informatics Department)
Judith (Criminal - UN - Informatics Department)
Eduardo Blinder ( Suspect, UN- Chief, Computer Technology Service)

WHAT
There has been a crime committed in the UN Informatics Department in Geneva/NYC - Judith has disclosed confidential and sensitive data to another organization. It is later determined that that organization is the Watchtower and Bible Tract Society (which was formerly associated with the U.N) but disassociated themselves in 2001 - shortly after the breach of data was detected. What kind of data was breached? Sensitive information about heads of state and delegates and representatives to the U.N.

HOW
Sensitive data was transferred from the UN Informatics Department in Geneva/NYC to the WBTSNYC through the secret key method which involves encrypting information and passing it on to someone who decrypts it using the same key.

WHY
The crime was committed by Judith who then made it seem as though Sophia was responsible due to her easy access to and expertise in the Informatics Department. Judith’s motivations for doing this is her unrequited love for Eduardo Blinder. Eduardo, in turn, is in love with Sophia. Eduardo finds out that Judith is responsible for the breach and she then arranges for him to be assaulted. Tony Capstone, an ex-military figure turned detective is investigating this crime and he contacts Judith re: the assault in order to pursue his lead. His initial suspicions lay with Sophia but since he learned of the assault he starts investigating Judith.

CHALLENGES & TRIUMPHS

As usual, the challenges that I faced were mostly technical. I had to learn to use Adobe Photoshop to create the poster as well as Illustrator for the title. I can get frustrated if I don't understand how to use something right away, but with a little bit of help from some tutorials I was able to resolve any issues that I had. I felt a sense of accomplishment when I overcame the technical challenges. Adobe Comp was a bit easier for me to use this time as I had practiced on it for the previous project. I am pleased with the new skills that I've acquired on Photoshop and Illustrator.

CONCLUSION

Overall, I learned that if I am patient with myself, I am able to pick up the technical skills that initially elude me. I also learned that Lynda.com and YouTube are valuable resources
