This trinity house was a victim of the " flipper house" epidemic that plagued Philadelphia for years. Fake floors, careless structural work and an Ikea kitchen covered the true character waiting to be discovered. Originally the client had architectural plans to build over her outdoor garden to add livable space, but quickly realized that the garden and house needed each other. So she decided to properly renovate the interior of the house and create a cozy environment by taking the chance to explore with reclaimed materials. My challenge was to design with two major things in mind, to make the small trinity feel visually bigger and reduce the anxiety created by all the angles in the kitchen. Our first task was to expand the 3 foot opening to a 9 foot to connect the two rooms. That required a engineer and major structural corrections from the previous construction. The rest was experimenting with many diffent reclaimed materails from barns, churches, mushroom farms, and local lumber farmers. This was truly a collaborative effort of many great minds and hard working, talented people.
