84 Marine Parade (wet market upgrade) FYP

In our Final Year Project we were tasked with redesigning the wet market at 84 Marine Parade. I came to the conclusion that gutting the entire wet market and re-doing it would destroy a lot of memories for people, so I wanted to create something that was progressive but also looked to the past. I wanted to create a building that would in essence take care of itself and was sustainable. In order to do this I incorporated a few elements in the building: soil planting, a hydroponic walkway and also a flatroof.
The hydroponic walkway would shelter and demarcate the clothes section and books which would shelve the clothes and books using upcycled wooden pallets. The flatroof would collect water which would then be sent to the pump roof to be treated with nutrients which would then be pumped through the hydroponic walkway. The vegetables and fruit grown on site in the vegetable patches would be sold right in the wet market and maintained by community programmes and the vendors themselves. Added to this each stall has a partially permeable wall with planters to be able to grow herbs etc that will also be sold in the wet market.
In incorporating all the greenery into the workspace and also along the perimeter, with the glass flatroof, it allows for a pleasant green experience that is truly self-sustaining and yet looks to the past for the processes of the future.
