"Griffin End Table"

By Dennis Zongker

This piece of furniture took me around 1100 hours to make. Carving and marquetry added to a piece of furniture can really take you back in time. When designing this piece I really wanted to add carvings to this piece of furniture without making it to busy. By adding eagle wings & the lions face and violin scrolls. Alone with marquetry of roses. This is the most enjoyable piece of furniture I’ve made so far.

Traditional Style Jewelry Box

These traditional style jewelry boxes have one with marquetry and one without. Both boxes are made with walnut burl veneer with bird’s eye maple for the trim. The veneers used in the marquetry were purpleheart for the roses, popular veneer for the leaves, with ebony and myrtle burl
veneers for the scrolls.

When you open the top lid it has dividers that are made out of birds-eye maple and you can either leave them in or you have the option of taking them out depending on your needs. The front door has marquetry of three roses and when you open it there are three hidden drawers for more storage. It also has two side doors with a single rose done in marquetry and when opened it has two rotating necklace carousels to display your necklaces.

“Rose Box”

Made from mahogany with ebony accents this box is designed to hold valuable treasures of any kind.
The carvings on the top and front give a natural, free-flowing style to match the shape of the box. When you open the lid it is done in marquetry of roses giving an elegant touch to complete the rose theme.

I used Ribbon Stripped Mahogany and Ebony for the hardwood. There is one with carving and marquetry and one without. The overall size is 9” wide x 13” long & 6 1/4” tall with the medallion.
"72 Note Music Box"

2011 "CWB National Design Portfolio People's Choice" Award Winner
 Custom made by Dennis Zongker

The music movement consists of three melodies, “March of the Wooden Soldiers”, “Waltz of the Flowers,” and “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The sound holes on the bottom and back of the box; it makes the 72 note movement sound clean and crisp.

With a musical theme throughout the music box and to have the veneers flow nicely from the inside of the box to the outside. By using veneers and their natural colors and grain, Dennis was able to make the marquetry look as things look in the real world. Dennis used a clear coat natural lacquer to bring out the natural qualities of the wood. By matching up the front and corners and sides and the back with maple burl veneer it looks like one piece of veneer all the way around the music box.

The black inlays around the trim and top lid and segmented feet he used Macassar Ebony. The marquetry for the violins on the outside of the top I used Flat Cut African Mahogany. The inside of the top he used Bloodwood for the Violins that way when you open up the lid to hear the music, you can see the same marquetry but in a different color of wood.

"England’s Queen Victorian Style King Size Bed "

Joint Brothers Venture....This beautiful original design King size bed. Dan Zongker, met with the customer and designed three pieces of furniture for their bedroom, a bed, dresser, and nightstand.

The customer was looking for something traditional with carving and some kind of burl veneer. The design he came up with was a style that is named for England’s Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901. This was a style applied to English and American furniture of that time. This style of furniture elaborates on Rococo and Louis XV style, with exaggerated curves and size, lush upholstery, and carvings. This 18th Century traditional design gives this bedroom set an exquisite look, which complement both elegance and grace.

Dennis Zongker then engineered the pieces on AutoCAD, except for the carvings, which he drew free hand. He did all the carving by hand. The bedroom set is made out of solid cherry and cherry veneer core plywood, Maple Burl Veneer. The crown molding I cut 16 layers of 1/8” solid cherry then glued them together on a radius template to equal the 1 3/4” thickness. One of the things Dennis enjoyed ,was making the radius crown moldings and fitting the center fan carving with the scrolls to the radius crown. He had to cope the inside top edge of the crown to match the radius of the scrolls.

"Contemporary Dining Table with Parquetry"

This is definitely a unique table. Our customer was looking for a table to compliment their dining room and sitting room theme. It was filled with precious collections of world travel artifacts with a solar system motif. Another challenge was complimenting the kitchen adjacent from these rooms.

Dan Zongker met with the customer, and designed this unique table. They had an existing table base, which
resembled the globe and galaxy, made of metal, which they wanted to re-use. Its a nice piece of art and we didn't want to lose the visual. Tying all these entities together was challenging and fun. The table is designed to represent the solar system, or galaxy to say. Inserting a glass center enabled the view of the artistic metal table base, from both the table top and from the sides, giving the table depth and perception. The table pattern itself is called parquetry. Geometric forms brought together in a picturesque scene, representing planets and streaks of shooting stars.

Dennis Zongker took on the challenge of fabricating the top. The top is made of White Birch, Northern Maple, American Walnut, English Walnut and Black Ebony. Each piece is hand cut to perfection using an old world technique called the window method. The edging around the outer edge of the table, and around the center opening are of solid maple, glued with 1/8" layers and bent around the perimeter of the table. This eliminates unsightly joints and provides the quality Zongkers is known for.
